Design Engineer

Our client is a leading independent supplier of Power Protection equipment including UPS, Chargers, Battery Packs, Generators etc. who due to the winning of new works are looking to recruit a Design Engineer.

Our client seeks a Design Engineer reporting to the Project Manager to assist in the smooth running of a Defence Contract.  The ideal candidate will have experience of electrical and mechanical design from concept to completion. An understanding of the Low Voltage Directive (LVD). Experience working with uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) and battery backup systems would be advantageous.

The Design Engineer will need to work with the Project Manager and the Design Manager (System Design Authority), coordinating with customers, suppliers, external bodies as well as senior management team.

Qualifications

  • A qualification in electrical or mechanical engineering to HNC or equivalent would be an advantage.

Key Requirements

  • The ideal candidate will have previous experience working with the following design packages:
  • Autodesk Inventor Professional
  • Design of standard and sheet metal parts / assemblies.
  • Creation of complete assemblies and sub-assemblies.
  • Creating bill of materials.
  • Preferably experience with the design of welded components.
  • AutoCAD o Production of 2D drawings.
  • AutoCAD Electrical
  • Production of schematic diagrams. Preferred but not essential:

Responsibilities

The work will involve:

  • Design new rugged power protection products, both electrical and mechanical, using Inventor/AutoCAD software.
  • Update and modify existing and legacy designs for new projects or to meet latest standards.
  • Design must include all aspects of the product such as quality, product safety, relevant standards, ergonomics, Form Fit Function, usability, reliability, availability, price, logistics support, spares, innovation, features & benefits.
  • Providing resource required to execute assigned design task.
  • Assist the Design Manager with design process for end-to-end project/product life cycle.
  • Deliver on time, on budget, on quality designs.
  • Ensure best practice technical, logistical & commercial direction is always in place for designs.
  • Perceive problems well in advance and consider the broad range of commercial and technical factors in assessing the situation, identifying workable solutions, and implementing approved solutions.

Additional tasks will include:

  • Liaise with purchasing to ensure the correct parts are ordered at the best price, using technical knowledge to ensure this is achieved efficiently.
  • Provide assistance with setting up test systems and prototype builds.
  • Assist with builds in the workshop when required.
  • Assist with system testing, in-house and on site.
  • Additional tasks as needed to ensure projects are completed on time, on budget, and within scope.
